What’s My Next Adventure?
A few weeks ago, my answer might have been, “Reach the next town.” Then it became, “Cross this state.” Now, after more than 1,600 miles, I’ve realized the next adventure isn’t defined by a destination. It’s defined by curiosity and presence.
Right now, my next adventure is riding west from Nebraska toward the wide-open landscapes of Wyoming and Montana. There are mountains to climb, weather to negotiate, and plenty of uncertainty. But if this journey has taught me anything, it’s that the best adventures aren’t measured by miles. They’re measured by what they reveal about ourselves, the people we meet, and the conversations we have.
One of the unexpected gifts of riding a bicycle across America has been meeting people whose curiosity became the beginning of a meaningful conversation.
Not text messages. Not emails. Not social media. Real, face-to-face conversations.
The kind where two people stand beside a bicycle, sit at a picnic table, or linger in front of a convenience store with no agenda other than genuine curiosity. Conversations where people take the time to listen to one another’s story.
Face-to-face conversation has a remarkable way of turning strangers into friends. A question becomes a story. A story becomes understanding. Before long, you realize you have far more in common than you ever imagined.
Technology allows us to communicate with almost anyone in the world. Conversation allows us to truly connect.
When I look back on this journey, I doubt I’ll remember how quickly I reached the next town or how many miles I rode on a particular day. I’ll remember the people who stopped to ask where I was headed, shared a meal, offered a place to camp, wished me a safe journey, or simply thanked me for my service.
This ride has reminded me that human connection still begins the same way it always has. One conversation at a time.
Since I can’t predict what comes next, I’m focused on remaining interested enough to discover it.
So let me ask you:
What’s your next adventure?
It doesn’t have to be a bicycle ride across America. It might be learning a new skill, exploring an unfamiliar place, saying yes to an opportunity that feels a little uncomfortable, or simply choosing to see today’s ordinary moments with fresh eyes.
Adventure begins the moment curiosity becomes more important than certainty.
Your next adventure is waiting. The only question is whether you’ll answer the invitation.
