The Unexpected Gift of the Ride

When most people think about a cross-country bike ride, they imagine the miles.

The physical challenge. The hills. The weather. The long days in the saddle.

And yes, all of that is part of the experience.

But what continues to surprise me most about this Warrior Expeditions ride is not the distance we’re covering. It’s the people you meet.

Yesterday we arrived in Bolivar, Ohio after another challenging day of riding and were graciously hosted by the local fire department for the night. We set up our tents behind the station, settled in, and started preparing for another evening of rest and recovery. Then something unexpected happened.

One of the neighbors noticed us setting up camp and walked over to introduce himself. We talked for a few minutes. Just a normal conversation between everyday people.

Then he left.

About thirty minutes later, he returned.

In his hand was a $100 gift card to a local diner so our group of veterans could have breakfast the next morning.

No fanfare. No expectation of recognition. Just kindness. Simple generosity.

Moments like this remind me that this expedition is about much more than riding a bicycle across America.

There’s something deeply meaningful about meeting people along the way who want to be part of the journey, even for a brief moment. People who simply want to encourage, support, and say, “We appreciate what you’re doing—and thank you for your service.”

It makes you proud and grateful.

And honestly, it restores your faith in people.

The headlines may convince us the world is divided, cynical, and disconnected. But out here on the road, I keep seeing something different.

Good, generous people who are willing to help strangers. People who see a group of veterans passing through town and decide they want to contribute in some way to the story.

That may be one of the greatest lessons of this ride: Adventure doesn’t just show you landscapes. Sometimes it reveals the goodness still quietly living in ordinary people.

And that might be one of the best parts of the journey.

Adventure boldly. And stay open to the kindness along the way.
