Raccoons, Rain & Approaching Storms

Today’s ride reminded me that long-distance cycling has a personality of its own. You can make plans, check forecasts, and think you know how the day will unfold…and then the trail politely laughs and writes a different story.

We rode 57 miles today from Channahon, Illinois to Peru, Indiana through a little bit of everything.

The morning opened with clear skies and calm air, one of those rare starts that feels like the day is quietly cooperating. But somewhere along the route the wind woke up and settled into a steady headwind, turning every mile into a slightly more negotiated agreement.

By afternoon, rain showers rolled in and transformed sections of the trail into a muddy obstacle course. Navigation became slower, traction became optional, and the approaching storms convinced us it was time to get off the trail before the weather escalated.

But the adventure actually started the night before.

Around camp, we had a determined raiding party of raccoons spend much of the night attempting to break into our panniers like tiny masked bandits running a midnight heist operation. Apparently, they had very strong opinions about our food supply and enjoyed cheese crackers and peanut butter, and a protein bar.

What this ride keeps teaching me is simple:

Every day is different. Every day is unpredictable.

You can’t control the wind.
You can’t control the rain.
You definitely can’t negotiate with raccoons.

But you can control your effort.

So the goal becomes simple: show up fully, adapt to what the day gives you, and let the outcome reveal itself one pedal stroke at a time.

Today’s mileage: 57 miles
Today’s lesson: Focus on the effort. Let the outcome unfold.
