Curiosity Changes the Journey

The greatest lessons of an adventure belong to those who pay attention.

I’ve paused my ride on the Great American Rail Trail for a while. This experience has given me a lot to think about, and I wanted to take some time to reflect on what I’ve experienced, what I’ve learned, and how this adventure is changing me.

One lesson has surfaced again and again, often in the quiet moments between towns, along empty stretches of trail, and in conversations with people I never expected to meet.

Our lives are quietly shaped every day by what we choose to notice and repeatedly pay attention to.

Every day, the world offers more than we could ever fully notice.

  • A sunrise breaking over the horizon.

  • A conversation with a stranger.

  • The rhythm of the tires on gravel.

  • The wind at your back.

  • A challenge asking you to grow.

  • A moment of gratitude hidden inside an ordinary day.

The most meaningful moments rarely demand our attention. They quietly slip past when we’re too busy trying to be interesting instead of being deeply interested in what’s unfolding before us.

But the ones you return to, day after day, begin to shape the way you see the world. They influence your thoughts, your choices, your outlook, and eventually, the person you’re becoming.

Your attention is like a compass. Wherever you point it, your life gradually follows.

During this ride, I’ve discovered that curiosity gives that compass its direction. The more interested I become in the people I meet, the landscapes I cross, and the unexpected moments that fill each day, the more this journey has to teach me. Every mile becomes an invitation to discover something new, not only about the road ahead, but about myself.

If you spend your days searching for reasons to complain, you’ll find them. If you spend them looking for wonder, kindness, and possibility, you’ll discover those too.

The world hasn’t changed.

Your attention has.

So whether you’re walking a trail, riding a bicycle, or simply moving through an ordinary day, ask yourself:

What is life inviting me to notice today?

Because the person you’re becoming is shaped by the things you choose to notice most.
