Closing In on 1,000 Miles
We’re closing in on mile 1,000 of this journey riding bicycles across the United States, and it feels like a giant milestone.
Maybe it’s because of all the experiences packed into these first thousand miles.
The generosity of strangers. The conversations in diners. The kindness of fire departments opening their doors. The quiet beauty of trails, farmland, and small towns most people pass without ever really seeing.
Or maybe it feels significant because of the challenges.
The heat. Humidity. Headwinds. Hills. Rain. Sore legs. Fatigue. Learning how to recover well enough to get up and do it all again the next morning.
Here’s what I think is happening out here:
Somewhere along the trails, the miles stop being just numbers.
They become stories.
Conversations with strangers. Unexpected kindness. Hard days with headwinds and heat. Quiet mornings breaking camp. Small victories that nobody else sees.
The miles become lessons.
About patience. Resilience. Gratitude. Adaptation. About what your body can endure and what your mind can learn to accept.
Big journeys are built in ordinary moments. One day. One ride. One challenge. One conversation at a time.
We’re not there yet, but 1,000 miles feels like a reminder that something meaningful is happening out here.
There are still thousands of miles, stories, and surprises waiting up the road.
