Success Is Continuing to Pedal
“Sometimes you eat the bear. Sometimes the bear eats you. Either way, you need to keep pedaling.”
This ride has taught me that effort and outcomes are related, but they’re not the same thing.
On some days, everything goes your way.
The wind is at your back.
The legs feel strong.
The trail is smooth.
The miles disappear almost effortlessly.
Those are the days when you eat the bear.
Then there are the other days.
The headwinds arrive early.
The rain turns the trail into mud.
The body feels tired before the ride even begins.
Those are the days when the bear eats you.
What I’m learning is that success isn’t determined by which kind of day you have.
Success is showing up again tomorrow.
The cyclists who persist through a journey like this aren’t the ones who avoid adversity. They’re the ones who accept that some days belong to them and some days belong to the bear, and they keep pedaling either way.
They don’t waste energy complaining about the weather, the hills, the headwinds, or the setbacks.
This ride is all about adapting, learning, and moving forward.
Because somewhere along a cross-country ride, you realize that the goal isn’t to eat the bear every day.
The goal is to stay in the game long enough to reach Washington state.
Adapt. Recover. Repeat. The bear doesn’t win unless you quit.
